Interview Session with Mr. Ochendo Chikamso Onyishi on H.E. Peter Mbah’s Leadership in Enugu so far

Following the publication of a viral opinion article titled: “Leadership Beyond Boundaries: H.E. Peter Mbah’s Impact in Enugu North Senatorial Zone,” the author — Mr. Chikamso Onyishi who hailed from Nru, in Nsukka LGA granted an exhilarating interview to The Concourse Media crew who intercepted him at Golf Course along 11 Park Ln, GRA, Enugu yesterday. He spared us ample time to give honest evaluation of Gov Mbah’s administration so far.

Excerpts:

The Concourse Media: Sir, thank you for joining us today, Chikamso. Your opinion piece on Governor Peter Mbah’s impact in Enugu North Senatorial Zone paints a vivid picture of his leadership. To start with, can you summarize what you believe are the most significant leadership qualities that make Governor Mbah stand out from other political leaders?

Chikamso Onyishi: Thank you for having me. Beyond doubt, Governor Peter Mbah typifies a unique genre of leadership characterized primarily by inclusiveness and vision. Despite facing electoral challenges, he has shown an empirical commitment to equitable development across all zones in Enugu State, especially Enugu North. His ability to prioritize infrastructural advancement while ensuring that every citizen feels represented is a hallmark of his governance. Such leadership qualities not only build trust, but they also forge a stronger social contract between him and the citizens of Enugu.

The Concourse Media: Your opinion article published some days ago, discusses the skepticism from some voters in Enugu North that may have led to their reluctance to support Governor Mbah during the elections. How do you think he is addressing this skepticism now that he is in office?

Mr. Onyishi: That’s a crucial point. You guys covered all the 2023 election stages, and you heard and saw for yourselves what transpired. In the buildup to that crucial ballots, many voters were initially influenced by local political narratives that misrepresented Dr. Mbah and his intentions. However, having justly crossed both the electoral and judicial hurdles that shaped the outcome of the ballot, Mbah knew that actions speak louder than words. He is addressing these concerns through impactful projects that resonate with each community’s needs, such as the establishment of SMART Schools and Type Two Hospitals across the State. By genuinely investing in education and healthcare, he is catalyzing a transformation that will hopefully change perceptions. His ongoing infrastructural projects are tangible proof that he is committed to the welfare of all, irrespective of electoral allegiance.

The Concourse Media: Speaking of these developments, can you elaborate on the SMART Schools and the healthcare projects? How do you see these initiatives contributing to the overall upliftment of the zone?

Mr. Onyishi: The SMART Schools initiative is particularly exciting. Designed to accommodate 102 wards in Enugu North, (and the rest 154 Wards across Enugu East and West zones), these schools will be equipped with modern facilities and technology for effective learning. This emphasis on education is crucial as it empowers young minds, ensuring they grow into capable leaders and innovators of our future. As for the healthcare projects, the Type Two Hospitals will significantly enhance access to quality medical services. As you can see, he has begun a massive recruitment of healthcare professionals (over two thousand of them) who are to work in the State Primary Healthcare centers — over 256 of them, across the State. The applicants have passed through the written interview stages as we speak. Mbah knew that health is foundational to human development; when citizens are healthy, they can thrive in their livelihoods. Together, these initiatives are not just enhancing immediate welfare, but they are also creating a ripple effect that supports long-term socioeconomic growth.

The Concourse Media: You mentioned the recent flag-off of the 43km Abakpa Nike- Ugwugo-Ekwegbe-Opi Nsukka dual carriageway. How do you envision this project affecting your own Zone in terms of both infrastructure and security?

Mr. Onyishi: The dual carriageway is a monumental project with multifaceted benefits. Even a suckling child knows this. From an infrastructural perspective, it’s aimed at significantly improving transportation and connectivity. By facilitating the movement of people and goods, it supports local commerce which is critical for economic recovery and growth. Furthermore, this road has seen high incidents of insecurity, particularly kidnapping, which has dissuaded many from using it regularly. The dualization initiative is set to address these security concerns by increasing visibility, allowing for easier surveillance and ultimately reducing crime along this route. Improved infrastructure and security go hand in hand, creating an environment conducive for business and peace. These are inherent gains of his investment in improving road network across the State.

The Concourse Media: You’ve touched on economic opportunities arising from these projects. Can you speak more on how Governor Mbah’s infrastructural initiatives might lead to economic growth in Enugu North?

Mr. Onyishi: Absolutely!

If you had paid attention to my earlier statements, you would have noticed that I had highlighted this question even before you asked it. Economic growth stems from improved infrastructure, which facilitates trade and encourages investments. The ongoing road construction projects, including the promise of constructing an additional 10km of road in each electoral Ward, will connect rural and urban areas, allowing farmers, traders, and businesses easier access to markets. It is elementary Economics that as transport costs lower due to better roads, we can expect lower prices for goods, further stimulating local economies. Additionally, enhanced accessibility often attracts new businesses, which can create jobs and further enhance economic resilience within our communities. Essentially, these infrastructures are not merely about mobility; they’re about laying the groundwork for enduring economic ecosystems.

The Concourse Media: In your opinion, how important is community engagement in Governor Mbah’s approach to governance? How do you see him encouraging community involvement in these initiatives?

Mr. Onyishi: Community engagement is vital. A government that listens to its people can tailor its initiatives to better suit local needs. Governor Mbah has hosted a hybrid Town Hall meetings with Ndi Enugu about eight months ago. Both Local and diaspora Enugu indigenes participated actively. He also engages them in many public functions he attends either in person or through his Deputy, Aids or Commissioners. In several fora, he demonstrated his commitment to inclusive governance by actively participating in community discussions. For instance, the idea of conducting a ward tour with active party members highlights his intention to engage citizens directly. This not only fosters transparency but also allows the citizenry to voice their concerns and aspirations. This participatory approach builds a sense of ownership and community pride in local projects, ultimately ensuring their sustainability and effectiveness.

The Concourse Media: How do you reckon that the political dynamics following the 2023 elections might influence Governor Mbah’s leadership and engagement with the opposition?

Mr. Onyishi: As I said in my preliminary remark, the aftermath of the 2023 elections brought a moment of reflection for political leaders. From what I can see, Governor Mbah’s leadership approach seems to transcend the usual partisan divides, as his focus remains on developing the State. His interaction with opposition leaders and their followers has been pivotal. Even last week, after the flag off of the Nsukka — Ugwuogo Nike road dualization project, many opposition leaders like Hon. Dennis Agbo representing Udenu/Igbo Eze North Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers sent him a glowing tribute. Apparently, he is successfully involving them in dialogues about common goals for the State, and it will foster a more collaborative political climate. Ultimately, the aim should be to unite for the common good rather than perpetuate divisions that leave communities underserved.

The Concourse Media: What recommendations would you give to the citizens of Enugu North Senatorial District in regard to supporting this current administration?

Mr. Onyishi: I would urge my good people of Enugu North to actively engage with Governor Mbah’s programs and make their voices heard. It’s vital to participate in public forums, community meetings, and local governance structures. Active civic engagement is crucial; not only does it help the administration gauge community needs, but it also ensures accountability. Moreover, showing support through participation in local initiatives or volunteering can strengthen the relationship between the government and the people. If we unanimously push a collective advocacy for ongoing projects, it will help the administration to maintain focus and resources on these programs, ensuring they reach fruition effectively.

The Concourse Media: In closing, do you believe that Governor Mbah’s administration could serve as a model for future leadership in Nigeria, especially for other leaders from underrepresented regions?

Mr. Onyishi: Without a doubt. Governor Mbah’s administration stands as an inspiring example for leaders across Nigeria, especially from the South East geopolitical zone. His affinity to inclusivity, development, and engagement with all factions of society presents a roadmap for rebuilding trust in leadership. By demonstrating that effective governance is not restricted to favoritism or political loyalty, but rather grounded in the equitable development of all communities, he is inspiring already a new generation of Leaders. His vision is refreshing, showing that what is needed to propel a State forward is shared responsibility and collaborative growth.

The Concourse Media: Thank you, Mr. Chikamso Onyishi, for your insightful perspectives on Governor Mbah’s leadership in Enugu. Your passion for community development is evident, and we appreciate you sharing your vision with us today.

Mr. Onyishi: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss these vital issues and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on leader

ship and governance in our beautiful state.
