Onitsha, Anambra State – Chaos broke out today in the bustling city of Onitsha, leaving at least three people dead and several others injured. The incident began when a group of revenue agents, reportedly working for the Anambra State government, pursued a tipper driver at Old Market Road near Venn Road.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the pursuit ended tragically when the driver lost control of his vehicle, striking and killing a bystander. Enraged by the incident, a mob descended on the revenue agents, killing two of them on the spot.
The violence escalated as mobs reportedly began targeting other revenue agents across the city, marking a turning point in what residents describe as a long-standing tension between citizens and the government’s enforcement teams.
“This is one death too many,” said a resident who pleaded for anonymity. “For the past two years, we’ve been enduring these incidents, and it’s time for something to change.”
The police have since arrived at the scene to restore order, but the situation remains tense. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
As investigations unfold, residents are calling on the government to address the underlying issues fueling the unrest and ensure that justice is served.
