Igbo-Eze South Chairman Celebrates World Disability Day with PWDs, Vows Support and Inclusion

The Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Barr. Ugochukwu Ferdinand Ukwueze, 3 December 2024 marked World Disability Day with a significant event aimed at celebrating and supporting Persons with Disabilities (PWD).

The event, held at the LGA Secretariat, was attended by numerous PWD within the council and several key local government officials, including the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Zacchaeus Ukwueze Ikedi, who represented the Chairman. Also in attendance was the Chief of Staff, Hon. Anthony Okonkwo.

In his address, Hon. Ukwueze reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to empowering the disabled community, stating:

“You are not defined by your disabilities but by your boundless abilities and contributions to society. This administration stands with you and will continue to ensure you receive the support, resources, and recognition you deserve. Gone are the days of marginalization and neglect. This administration views every citizen, irrespective of physical condition, as a vital contributor to the collective progress of Igbo-Eze South. Together, we will ensure that no one is left behind in our journey towards a more inclusive and prosperous society.”

He further added, “Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and our Chairman, Hon. Ugochukwu Ferdinand Ukwueze, we are building a society where every individual; regardless of ability, can live with dignity, contribute meaningfully, and achieve their full potential.”

The gathering followed a recent meeting between PWD representatives and the local government chairman, during which critical issues were discussed.

The Chairman of the PWD group, Mr Christian Ikechukwu commended the administration for its supportive stance, contrasting it with the neglect they had experienced in the past.

Speaking on behalf of the group, he said:

“We are grateful to the Chairman for his assurances that we are not lesser humans. His administration has embraced us with dignity, promising the support we need to thrive in our various trades and professions.”

The event also featured a showcase of skills by members of the PWD community, including fashion design, baking, and shoemaking, highlighting their contributions to the local economy.

As the event concluded, the administration reiterated its pledge to create a more inclusive environment, ensuring that PWDs are fully integrated into the development framework of Igbo-Eze South.
