On November 9, 2024, the Executive Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Asogwa Chinedu-KSJI issued an executive order prohibiting the operations and activities of iron scrap dealers within the LGA. This decisive action has received broad public approval, acknowledged as bold, timely and essential to curb rising instances of theft and vandalism.
Iron scrap dealers or “Iron Condemn Dealers” as they’re popularly called, in Nsukka LGA have increasingly posed significant threats to public order and safety, frequently implicated in incidents of theft and property damage. Their activities have not only targeted private properties but also critical public infrastructure, resulting in considerable hardship for the affected victims. Reports indicate a range of thefts including stealing of transmission towers, building materials such as starter bars in construction sites, and even break-ins to steal household valuables.
Investigations have further uncovered that these dealers’ actions have directly contributed to persistent flooding issues along Enugu Road. According to residents, the vandals dismantled essential metal filters designed to prevent debris from clogging the underground drainage tunnels. The absence of these filters allowed substantial buildup of refuse within the tunnels, leading to severe blockages and exacerbating flooding risks.
The public has voiced strong support for Engr Jude Asogwa Chinedu’s strong stand, viewing it as a proactive measure to restore security and safety across the Local Government Area. This directive aligns with an existing Enugu State law that similarly restricts the activities of such scavengers. With this bold step, Mayor Asogwa has underscored his commitment to preserving public infrastructure, protecting residents’ properties, and ensuring a safer, and cleaner environment for all.
In the long run, measures may be put in place to ensure due classification between duly recognised scrap businesses and these crim!nal elements called “Iron Condemn Dealers”. For now, their activities remain prohibited!
