Amid rising defections shaking its foundation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting to address the mass exodus of its members, TodaysPrime reports.
The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, comes as the PDP battles to contain the fallout from what party insiders have dubbed “Hurricane Tinubu” the wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The latest blow was the dramatic defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor and former vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside Delta’s entire PDP structure, including the deputy governor, commissioners, and council chairmen. Their defection, formalized after a closed-door meeting in Asaba, has weakened PDP’s grip in one of its traditional strongholds.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior party official confirmed to TodaysPrime that the meeting would deliberate on the crisis, future congresses, and the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) session. “Many who defect do so for personal reasons or fear of anti-corruption probes,” he noted.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, whose position as National Secretary was recently reaffirmed by the Supreme Court, has vowed to attend the meeting despite tensions with the PDP Governors Forum, led by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
In separate interviews, PDP leaders like Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary Diran Odeyemi stressed the need for unity, calling for deeper consultations, reconciliation, and urgent action to stop further collapse.
They urged PDP governors to move beyond press releases and tackle internal issues head on, warning that continued silence and disunity could spell doom for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Since February 2024, over 300 PDP members have reportedly defected to the APC, with the South-South zone, once a PDP fortress, now severely weakened.
As the PDP braces for Tuesday’s meeting, the outcome could determine whether the party regains its footing or continues its slide towards political irrelevance.
